Q&A
Question: What is the goal of the mentorship program?
Answer: The goal of the mentorship program is to provide a comprehensive, in-depth training to prospective mentors. Completion of this program will qualify educators to be a skilled mentor and/or qualify educators to provide mentor training to other members of their professional staff. Prospective mentor teachers will become aware of the process of developing an effective mentor/mentee relationship within their school district. Trained mentors will be equipped with the skills needed to provide support and guidance to new teachers as they navigate the first years of their teaching career. The ultimate goal is to provide new teachers with the strategies needed to navigate a pathway to develop, refine, and implement the skills needed to maintain a long career in the field of education.
Question: How do I become a mentor?
Answer: To become a mentor, you typically need to have at least 5 years of experience, have received tenure, and have an effective and/or highly effective rating. Usually, to become a mentor, there is a selection process that may include district and building level administration. To become a mentor, it is important to take a comprehensive mentor training program, such as the one Educator Care offers, which meets state suggested standards. These standards include, but are not limited to, how to implement a mentoring program, relationship building and communication skills, observations, and providing feedback and evaluating the effectiveness of a district’s mentoring program.
Question: How long is the professional development course?
Answer: The length of the course will vary depending on the goal of enrollment. If a prospective mentor would like training to meet state guidelines and standards, the coursework is 15 hours. This time can be organized into 3 full-day professional development sessions or 3-hour sessions over a 5-day period. If the goal of enrollment is to give an overview of the components of a successful mentoring program, Educator Care will provide professional development in a 6-hour day. Educator Care’s professional development also extends to administrators who are interested in bringing a comprehensive teacher mentoring program into their schools and/or districts. Educator Care will outline the program and the implementation of it. The length of this type of PD would be decided amongst all parties involved.
